Major Web Server upgrade

Posted by ParaDOX on Saturday, February 25, 2006 (EST)

I am in the process of configuring a new machine for our website. Expect some outages...

I just couldn't pass up a deal for a Dual Xeon machine to use for our Web, Mail, Database server. This has prompted me to reconfigure all of the machines and their uses at home...

Be patient as this update will occur this weekend and there will be Web site outages during those times.

When this upgrade is done the Web server performance should be greatly enhanced. You may not notice the performance increases until sometime in June when I get a major bandwidth increase... Yes, I have to wait until June, it isn't available in my area yet!

Well, I have to get back to work! I will post an update here shortly.

This should not affect the game servers, we hope!

Ooops....
By ParaDOX on Monday, February 27, 2006 (EST)

I shut down the old mail server and forgot that the site uses the Old mail server for notifications... (duh!) I changed it to the newer server, problem solved... Notifications should go out as previously...

I wonder how many Posts I missed? That sucks! I wonder if I can trigger the unmailed notifications to go out somehow... hmmm it will have to wait until the upgrade is complete.

Speaking of which... I have not made as much progress with the upgrade as was hoped due to the massive reoganization of the space the servers are located... The Actual upgrade will begin shortly. I have done a lot of the prep-work.

More information soon.... Stay tuned!

Phase two complete!
By ParaDOX on Saturday, March 04, 2006 (EST)

OK, the site is back up... After a long outage during which I was transfering and moving the old Drives to the new RAID array, is over. The end result should be a faster drive array. You won't notice the speed improvements for a while. The Array is still Initializing it's Parity (Array's use Parity to make then redundant). This could take a while. I am also moving other files from another old drive to the new drives. This is also slowing down the system for the next few hours...

All in all the upgrade is going well, albeit slower than anticipated. Most of the delays are due to my scheduling issues.

I have 2 more phases left:

  1. Migrate large (1 TB) Array to new server, Move SCSI card and remap drive shares... Piece of cake... Needs restart. Add Backup Tape drive, setup new backup plans...
  2. Figure out the safest way to update the HAL to use the multiprocessors and implement it. This is going to be the tough one! I may have to reinstall/repair windows to make this work... ugh...

That's it. Thank you for your patience during these upgrades.

Phase 2.5
By ParaDOX on Tuesday, March 07, 2006 (EST)

I have completed the upgrade in-place to enable the Multiprocessor support.

It was not difficult, just time consuming...

The next phase should take place during this week. It should not take too long...

MaIn upgrades complete!
By ParaDOX on Saturday, March 18, 2006 (EST)

I have completed the main upgrades. The Server has been up for over a week now. No errors or other issues so far, Very stable! It may not seem faster but trust me it is. If I can get more bandwidth then you will see a huge speed improvement...

Now I am working on a few more things... A new firewall, when that's done it will allow me to do more things...

That's it for now... Keep you posted!
